Welcome to Viva La Vida Imports! We are a Mexican, queer, women-owned small business proudly located in the heart of Detroit’s Eastern Market. Our mission is to connect Mexican artisans with you through Fair Trade practices, while celebrating and sharing the beauty and richness of Mexican culture. At Viva La Vida Imports, we work directly with indigenous artisans from regions across Mexico to bring you authentic, handcrafted folk art. Each piece is a reflection of the traditions, creativity, and dedication of the communities who make them. We believe that supporting local artisans not only helps preserve traditional craft techniques but also strengthens sustainable, thriving communities. Every item we carry is thoughtfully curated and lovingly crafted — a true labor of love that honors the hands and heritage behind it. By purchasing from us, you’re not only acquiring a beautiful work of art — you’re also helping to empower Mexican artisans and their families. Thank you for supporting our mission and being part of this community of love, culture, and craftsmanship.
Our story begins in 2016, born from a deep appreciation for our Mexican roots and a desire to honor and celebrate our culture. What started as a small dream — selling handmade crafts at local weekend markets — has grown into a vibrant space in the heart of Detroit’s Eastern Market District. In the early days, we traveled across Mexico, meeting local artisans and learning about their craft firsthand. We were moved by the incredible skill, dedication, and soul that each artisan pours into their work. Their artistry deserved to be seen, valued, and celebrated on a larger scale. From those journeys came our purpose: to connect Mexican artisans with people around the world who share a love for authentic, one-of-a-kind pieces of cultural art. Today, Viva La Vida Imports continues to grow as a bridge between communities — honoring tradition, empowering artisans, and celebrating the beauty of Mexico, one handcrafted piece at a time.
Diana and Paola have the kindest hearts and work hard to make their customers feel valued. Their products are all carefully hand crafted and beautifully colorful. I have gotten the chance to build a bond with these ladies and learn more about the artisans in Mexico that make their livelihood off of these handmade goods. They regularly have new arrivals and a wide variety of products. I love that each order comes with a free little extra gift too!
I've been shopping with Paola and Diana for over six months, the products are great quality, they are super friendly, honest and willing to work with their customers. I would absolutely love to visit them in person and can't wait to do so!! Below are only very few items I've purchased and gifts i received from these lovely ladies 🖤
This store is spectacular! It has been awesome to watch Diana and Paola progress from a stand at Eastern Market to a colorful, well-designed brick and mortar store across the street. They are proud and passionate about their culture and their energy is infectious! I especially love the leather bags and purses (I have quite a few). Every item is handmade and has a story. This store is a must-see if you are at the market!
